Patrick and Kathy Devine
The Alma M. Gessman Memorial Award in Nursing was established by alumnus Patrick T. Devine, BS ‘87, MBA ’91, and his wife, Katherine “Kathy” A. Devine in memory of Kathy’s paternal grandmother, Alma M. Gessman, who served as a founding member of the town of Blooming Grove’s Volunteer Ambulance Corps for 25 years. This award, in Alma’s memory, is intended to help a dedicated Cal State East Bay nursing student who also wants to make a difference in people’s lives.
Patrick Devine has not only worked with notable Silicon Valley powerhouses for the past 30 years, he has also become a dedicated volunteer at Cal State East Bay. Since 2011, he has served on the Cal State East Bay Educational Foundation Board of Trustees. He has taught courses in compensation management for the Human Resources Management Certificate program with CSUEB’s Continuing Education division and also served as a guest lecturer for the College of Business & Economics. In recognition of his professional expertise and outstanding community volunteerism, Patrick was chosen as the 2010 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year.
“We all have gifts – but it is not a gift unless you give it away to someone,” he says. “I have received many gifts and breaks along the way, and I feel obligated to help others in the same way. When you help someone, there’s a feel-good factor – and gifts are never missed, because they do good for the recipient and the giver.”
