Carol Sughrue Scholarship for International Peace and Understanding

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support to an undergraduate student, regardless of major, who has a commitment to refugee and immigrant communities and/or a commitment to promoting international understanding and peace. The award is intended to cover tuition, housing and other costs related to completing an undergraduate degree at Cal State East Bay.

Eligible recipients shall meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a first generation college student, defined as follows: the student’s parents, grandparents and/or legal guardians did not graduate from college as self-described in an essay.
  2. Demonstrate financial need as evidenced by: submitting a 2019-2020 FAFSA or writing a 250-500 word essay stating how the scholarship will help with the cost of your education.
  3. Submit a 250-500 word essay describing your commitment to: promoting international understanding and peace and/or your support for refugee and immigrant communities including any personal experience you may have. What have you already done in this area and what are you planning to do?

  3. Describe your commitment to: 1) promoting international understanding and peace; and/or 2) your support for refugee and immigrant communities, including any personal experience you may have. Make sure to talk about what you have already done AND what you are planning to do.
  4. Have you filed a FAFSA ("Free Application for Federal Student Aid")?
  5. If you have not filed a FAFSA then please demonstrate your financial need by writing a 500-word essay describing how this scholarship will help you with the cost of your education.
